Welcome to Cherry Tree Montessori Nursery in East Dulwich. We are a Montessori setting which is based on the principals of an Italian doctor, born in 1870, called Maria Montessori.

Maria Montessori noticed that if children were given the opportunity to select to partake in a challenging task appropriate to their developmental stage, they quickly became absorbed and gratified by that task.

The Montessori approach and resources help to identify any hidden learning impairments such as "Speech" "Hearing" and "Visual - Sight".

Montessori is about encouraging and enabling children to think independently via their own exploration and problem-solving abilities. Contrary to what is sometimes believed, although the children often work individually, they have the freedom to work with others if they wish and findings show they will often spontaneously help one another and support the group as a whole.

In Montessori schools, the child is seen as a unique sensory being and they aim to challenge each of the five senses throughout their education. There are no ‘formal’ lessons as such - but rather, all subjects on the curriculum are explored by individual and practical experience at the child’s own pace and development.

There is adult initiated play to introduce children to the Montessori resources, to give the children stimulation as well as challenging them at the same time. We find that this allows the children to benefit from quality playtime.

2-5's Play Room

Baby Room

Welcome to the Baby Room which caters for the children from birth to 2 years, which features a play area with sleeping facilities and its own changing area. All activities and resources are readily available to the children throughout the day.

Children are given choice and access play experiences freely, inspiring their curiosity and promoting their independence. Staff promote children's learning within a stimulating environment to provide a good foundation to develop physical and cognitive growth.

"Staff are highly responsive to children's interests and needs. Babies respond well to the staff and imitate what they say. They enjoy sensory experiences, for example, as they play with sand, fill containers and make sandcastles". Ofsted Report 2016

Our belief is that all children need time to be children and play. They do not benefit from a rigid structure at this stage of development. Therefore within all the routines there is an element of choice and discovery of learning through play and guidance.

"Baby's early communication skills are supported extremely well by staff.

Babies receive lots of warmth and affection. This supports their emotional well-being and gives them the confidence to explore new experiences. Children's self-esteem is built upon by staff who are sensitive to their needs and know them well" Ofsted Report 2011
Our nursery has been newly refurbished and beautifully decorated throughout, including a brand new garden area for the children to enjoy. The children's work is proudly on display on every wall, of which they are all very proud to show the nursery visitors and one another.

We have invested in some beautiful equipment for the children to assist with the exciting activities we do each day. We have writing and computer area for the children to focus and thrive on new skills as well as an art and craft area to have fun getting messy!

"The manager and staff team are passionate and committed to improving outcomes for the children. They provide a positive working environment where staff work well together and are supported to keep their knowledge of current legislation up to date" Ofsted Report 2016

We communicate with parents with daily records informing you of how your child has been at nursery. Parent reviews are held termly to discuss your child's development and any concerns you may have. It is also a great way for you to come into the nursery to observe activities that the children do throughout the day.

"Partnerships with parents and other professionals are effective. They share a wide range of information, which helps enable staff to meet children's needs successfully." Ofsted Report 2016

At the end of the year for Christmas we like to put a performance on, where the children excel in their confidence and personalities.

2-5's Classroom

Welcome to the 2 to 5 years room. The friendly, homely, relaxed environment in our children's areas reflects our desire to create a safe and enjoyable environment for the children to grow and develop life skills. We amalgamate the age groups 2's, 3's, 4's and 5's together some of the time, who access a large classroom to participate in independent activities and spontaneous lessons.

"Staff nurture children's emotional and social well-being very well and they support children as they move through the nursery and on to school. Children benefit significantly from being able to move freely around the premises."
Ofsted Report 2016

We provide exciting opportunities for children to explore, which helps to create the right balance needed for children to progress within their development. We know the importance of nurturing children's developments and will plan for outside agencies and outings to assist with their knowledge and understanding, relating to the children's interests.
